Timeline
8 Weeks until Move
- Contact your mover to make arrangements for moving day.
- Remove items from your attic, basement, storage shed, etc.
7 Weeks until Move
- Start to use up things you can't move, such as frozen foods and cleaning supplies.
- Contact the Chamber of Commerce or visitor's and tourism bureaus in your new community for information on your new city.
- If you are moving at an employer's request, verify what expenses and responsibilities are theirs and which are yours.
- Contact the IRS and/or your accountant for information on what moving expenses are tax-deductible.
6 Weeks until Move
- In order to make unloading and moving in easier and faster, sketch a floor plan of your new home and prearrange furniture.
- Transfer holdings from your current bank to your new bank.
- Call your insurance company to arrange transfer of personal property insurance.
- Make sure there are no outstanding tax assessments and clear if needed.
5 Weeks until Move
- Contact schools, doctors, dentists, lawyers, accountants, and veterinarians and obtain copies of your family's personal records. Ask for referrals where possible.
- Locate all auto licensing and registration documents.
- Begin to inventory and evaluate your possessions. What can be sold or donated to a chartable organization? What haven't you used within the last year.
- If you have items in more than one location, consolidate into one location, if possible.
4 Weeks until Move
- Decide if storage will be necessary at your destination.
- Notify local utilities to turn off service after you leave and inform them of new address where final bill can be sent. Arrange to have utilities in your new city turned on before arrival. Be sure that utilities from your moving location are not turned off until after move day.
- Change your address at the post office and arrange to have mail forwarded. Or use web at USPS.com.
- Notify your church, temple, organizations, magazines, book and record clubs, credit card companies, etc.
4 Weeks until Move
- Plan on what you are going to pack yourself and begin process.
- Make a list for the movers of what to pack last and unpack first and the rooms you want them placed in.
- Confirm with Lane's Moving and Storage your plans.
- Dispose of anything that may leak or be flammable.
- Have rugs and drapes cleaned and keep them in their protective wrappings.
3 Weeks until Move
- Be sure to pack your old phone book and update your address book.
- Transfer and fill prescriptions.
- Return anything you may have borrowed from friends and neighbors.
- Make arrangements for pre- and post-move appliance servicing. Lane's can do this for you.
- Make arrangements to transport your pets and plants to your new location, if necessary.
2 Weeks until Move
- If you're moving out of or into a building with elevators, contact the building management to schedule use of the elevators.
- Make travel arrangements and reservations for your moving trip. However, don't make plane reservations for the same day that you are moving out. House closings are often delayed, and other unexpected situations often arise.
- Obtain a subscription to the local paper in your new community to familiarize yourself with local government, community, and social news and activities. Click here to find a local newspaper.
1 Week to Go
- Pack and label items you are taking with you in the car, and those you want to have with you as soon as your arrive at your new home. These essentials should include:
- Telephone
- Telephone Book (New and Old)
- Paper Towels
- Toilet Paper
- Soap
- Light Bulbs
- Flashlight
- Pliers
- Screwdriver
- Can Opener
- Paper Plates
- Plastic Utensils
- Toothpaste and Toothbrushes
- Snacks
- Coffee and Coffee Pot (don't forget the filters)
- Pot and pan for cooking
- Ziploc bag filled with hardware from disassembled items, such as dresser mirrors and beds
- Drain fuel and oil from lawnmowers and other power equipment.
- Use up or give away your frozen food supply.
- Remove breakables, spillables and small items like jewelry from all your drawers.
- Close your bank account and retain enough money to pay the driver when he arrives at your destination, unless your employer is paying for your move. You will need a certified check, cashier's check, bank check (drawn on a bank, signed by an officer) or cash.
- Don't forget to withdraw the contents of your safety deposit box, pick up any dry cleaning, return library books and rented videotapes, etc.
- Remove mirrors and pictures on the walls, and other wall accessories such as drapery rods, small appliances, etc. Put small parts belonging to these items in envelopes and label for easy identification upon arrival at your new location.
- Take a final, complete inventory.
The Day Before
- Our packers usually pack on this day. Before you sign the packing form, verify the number of boxes packed, and that all services have been performed.
- If you want certain items kept together in your new home, organize them so they will be packed together.
- Empty, defrost and dry out your refrigerator/freezer. Be sure to block doors open so they can't accidentally close on pets or children.
Moving Day
- Plan to eat out.
- Strip beds.
- Be at home when the movers arrive and throughout the process of moving out. If you can't be there, make sure we have in writing the name and phone number of the person you have authorized to take your place.
- Tour your home with the driver to examine the goods to be moved.
- Check the conditions of items, as they are loaded.
- After loading and before the driver has left, tour your home again to make sure nothing has been overlooked.
- See that your new address and phone number are correct on the bill of lading.
- Turn off all switches, lock all windows and doors. Give house keys to your real estate agent. Leave your new address in the house so the new owners can forward any mail that inadvertently gets delivered.
- Be at your new home when the driver arrives or have in writing the name and phone number of the person you have authorized to take your place.
- Inventory your belongings as they leave the truck.
- Use your new home floor plan to assist the driver with proper furniture placement.
- The driver will set up your beds.
- Make arrangements for payment.
